A Dozen and a Half Memes of Topical Interest, Presented Largely Without Comment

The current unholy rush by the Party of Rape to seat President Pussy-Grabber's nominee to the Supreme Court is morally bankrupt and deeply disturbing to anyone who believes in the survival of the American republic.  That anyone supports this nominee after his disgraceful and juvenile display of partisan belligerence and evasive lying is a damning indictment of American culture and values.  This cannot stand.

This post, of all of your articles, can NOT stand without comment.

Yet, I have no words.

I have opinions. I have sorrow. I own the flaming anger of a Nova sun. I have memories of a Republic and a dream of the future. I have another memory; Someone Else's Words:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, ...

But I have no words.

You are always welcome to contribute words. And those are good words.

I will not go silently into that dark night of authoritarian rule. I will not go silently into a world where any part of this nominee is acceptable.

Even without the credible sexual assault charges he is unfit to serve as a federal judge.

With them, he is so much worse.

I believe what disturbs me most is the loss of Honor.

The men who wrote the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States were not just men who harbored high ideals. They were, for the most part, men of Honor. Men who believed in something greater than 'self'.

Note that in that Preamble, Keywords of import were capitalized. Words like 'People', 'Union', 'Justice', 'Tranquility'. 'Welfare', 'Liberty', and 'Posterity'.

Good words, all committing to something greater than 'self'. A vision of a nation, unlike anything the world had ever seen.

This whole handling of the nomination of SCOTUS nominees by the republicans spotlights that loss of Honor in ways no other single event could.

And, what is more - They. Do. Not. Care.

Obviously, they have never had Honor.

We have reached the point in our history where people who believe in anything greater than their own self-interest are labeled "Socialists" by people who clearly have no idea what Socialism is or any clue whatsoever as to American history. The Founders did indeed believe in something greater - in a public good, one that individuals of virtue (a jargon term at the time) would of course sacrifice their petty private interests to achieve.

They also believed that political parties were a sign of the death of the republic, on the not unreasonable grounds that parties were simply engines of private interests working against the public good. Men of virtue (and by and large they did mean men - "virtue" has the same "vir" root as "virile" after all, and that's how you know that their sense of virtue is not the same as ours) would of course recognize the public good and join to work toward it. Parties were simply "factions" or "juntos" - evils that bode ill for the survival of the republic.

We don't buy into the ideology of the Founders anymore - haven't since 1820 or so. But maybe they were onto something.

Because that sickening display of partisan greed over the good of the country certainly bodes ill for the survival of the republic.

These are not men of honor. These are not men of virtue. These are barely men at all.
