There is an old story about a Chinese curse that says “May you live in interesting times.” I have no idea if this is an actual Chinese curse, but I can tell you that it might as well be. We live in interesting times these days. And it definitely feels like a curse.
The only president this nation has at the moment has lost his goddamned mind and nobody among his vast flock of cronies, lackeys, minions, enablers and slaves has the backbone to do anything about it. They’re just standing around, trying to figure out how to make money off the situation and remain in power once the demographically inevitable happens and for that they all need to be hauled off in chains, dipped in honey, and airdropped onto a field of anthills.
He’s declared a trade war against what was once our firmest ally and still remains our closest neighbor – a country that shares a coast-to-coast border with the US, remains the largest trading partner with a majority of states, and which is at least in part responsible for the Geneva Conventions on the grounds that rules are made when they’re necessary. Remember, folks, the US has invaded Canada twice and gotten its ass handed to it both times. Last week he decided that he’s going to rename Lake Ontario into something that fits into his tiny little ideological bubble, much to the disgusted contempt of the rest of the world. Perhaps he hopes this will distract from his catastrophic failure as a president or from his vast and expanding criminal record. Who knows what inanities flit through the waterlogged ruins of his mind. The US/Canada relationship will not recover in my lifetime, because, as the Canadian leader said, the American government’s signature is made in pencil and about as changeable. Anything that a competent and intelligent future president tries to do to fix this can easily be destroyed by the next cult leader Trump’s slaves decide to elect, after all. Trust is hard to build but easy to destroy and once destroyed it may or may not ever come back.
He continues to flail around trying to find a way out of the illegal war of aggression he stupidly launched against Iran – a country that his own administration said back in February constituted no threat to the United States. No other US president was dumb enough to declare war on Iran – not Reagan, not even Bush Jr. – and we know why. Even if the US were not being led by a senile child-raping grifter who installed a drunken cosplayer as the Secretary of Waaawrrrrr it would have been a difficult operation, but having purged the US military of every senior leader who was a) not a white man and b) not an ass-kissing toady, that task became impossible. Leaders of the Navy and multiple Commands across the globe have bluntly warned Pete Kegstand that the continuation of the war is dangerously degrading the military’s ability to do its job across the globe, which of course prompted our Secretary of Waaawrrrr to call anyone sharing that story deranged and mentally ill because that’s what leadership looks like in an age of bootlicking slaves. At some point our Convicted Felon will suck the strategic oil reserve dry (and no, stealing Venezuala’s oil won’t stop or even significantly delay this) and then it will all come crashing down in a hurry.
Folks, we’ve already lost the Iran War. Our so-called leadership is just too stupid to admit it. We’ve lost access to pretty much all of our bases in the middle east – whether we should have had them at all, at this point in history, is a different question – and our only ally in the region is currently committing genocide because apparently Never Again doesn’t count when the descendants of victims do it to others. As if. The economy is teetering and the fact that the lickspittle in charge of the US Treasury announced recently that it is buying back US debt should scare the hell out of Americans because that means nobody else wants to buy it and that means the whole economic house of cards that we’ve been living in under the GOP’s Don’t Tax But Spend Like A Drunken Sailor economic policies for the last half century is about to come crashing down on your mortgage and your credit card balance. Hope you enjoyed having a dollar that was worth something. Remember it fondly.
It’s been over 200 days since the Epstein Files were required by federal law to be released but the toady in charge of the Justice Department continues to defy federal law and instead devote resources to persecuting whomever the Pedo-in-Chief demands he persecute next. We know that Convicted Felon Donald J. Trump’s name comes up in those files over 35,000 times. We’ve seen the allegations leveled by children against him for what he did to them – crimes those children were willing to speak under oath to the FBI in order to describe. Any just society would have fed the Pedo-in-Chief to the dogs by now, but that’s not us apparently. Watching Trump’s slaves continue to excuse his behavior has been morally degrading even at a distance.
Trump’s private Gestapo continues to kidnap and traffic both citizens and legal residents of the US – the vast majority of whom have no criminal record whatsoever and aren’t even being accused of a crime now – and the current plan is that they’re going to buy electric shock gloves to torture people into submission. Bear in mind, my fellow Americans, that the Founding Fathers literally staged a revolution over the idea of a tyrant’s private army hauling people off the streets and out of their homes for pretend crimes and shipping them out of the country to disappear them into prisons without due process. That’s a lesson for American patriots.
He and his minions, cronies, lackeys, and slaves are actively working to sabotage the midterm elections because they knows very well they’re going to lose by historic margins – every Republican with more than six functional brain cells to clap together knows this, which granted doesn’t seem to be a majority if you go by the news but there it is – and when that happens there had damned well better be swift and severe justice for the crimes this administration has committed. They know it’s coming, and their solution to the fact that they’re going to lose any free and fair election that happens is not to change their ways but instead not to have free and fair elections. Texas, for example, just purged over a million voters from their rolls mere days before early voting was scheduled to start, and they did so without warning or due process. They know their Senate candidate – a man so morally corrupt that he was impeached by his own party – is flaming out against a far better man and they can’t handle it. And just today a damning whistleblower report revealed the plans that Trump’s Post Office have for directly violating a federal court order in order to prevent mail-in votes from being processed. Watch your back, my fellow Americans. This fall is going to involve some very interesting times indeed.
The sad thing is that this list can be extended indefinitely. Every day is a cornucopia of corruption, vice, criminal activity, authoritarianism, moral degradation, and willful stupidity, and yet the cult eats it up and begs for more. A friend of mine on Facebook asked any supporter of the current president to list why they supported this guy – not why they hated everyone else, but why this guy deserved their support – and the barrage of delusion, viciousness, and historical fallacy that fell on his comment section was one of the most disturbing and depressing things I have ever read, and I read post-apocalyptic novels for fun.
It’s going to be a bumpy ride, folks.
Buckle up, strap in, and hang on, because these times are definitely more interesting than they need to be.

This blog entry contains nowhere near enough profanity. Three or four Level 1 curse words at best. This subject has honestly earned some serious Level 3 Profanity. “We’re Fucked” doesn’t even begin to describe our current situation, and you didn’t even go that far.
Slacker. ๐คจ ๐
This country’s trust, now broken, can NEVER be regained. Never. As you pointed out, the world now KNOWS that our pledge is worthless. Pencil? More like demonstrably treacherous. I watch an awful lot of Tod Maffin’s videos. https://www.youtube.com/@todmaffinvideo
He still calls himself ‘Your Emotional Support Canadian’, but he isn’t talking to us much anymore. Most of his recent videos slant toward helping Canadians wean themselves off of US dependency. Even when he does speak directly to us, his words now seem to verge on resentment*: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/XJbNaoUDpmo
I’ve never really understood the concept of “shame” until now — in fact, here’s something I never thought possible: I now openly admit to being embarrassed and ashamed to be a citizen of this country. Half of the citizens of this country are clinically insane. The other half can see no way to fix that. (There are not that many therapists in the universe.) Worse: no way to extricate ourselves from this waking nightmare. The really scary part is that I’m no longer sure which group I'm part of.
Yes, we are well and truly fucked.
I’m told that I am an exceptionally profane man, yet I can not find coarse enough descriptors to express the level of just how well and truly fucked this country is — so I guess I’m pretty much forced to forgive your inability to do so. The words don’t seem to exist.
Maybe, just maybe, we need to invent new words that will define Level 4 Profanity.
Perhaps.
Lucy
* Likely the wrong descriptor, but my brain is unable to find the correct one.
Well, that’s what first drafts are for. You have to get that sort of thing out of your system otherwise it takes over the whole piece and then it becomes a linguistics demonstration rather than a blog post. Granted, sometimes it is good to exercise some artistry with the language, since we are Well And Truly Fucked.
I do like Tad Maffin’s videos. He provides a useful and generally entertaining counterpoint to the current crisis, but I have to say that I don’t blame him for shifting focus to weaning Canada off the US and to having a fair amount of resentment toward the US government in particular and the situation in general. Frankly I agree with him. At this point, for as long as there are Trump cultists roaming the streets unmedicated, they’re better off without us. And that’s pathetic.
There are ways to extricate ourselves from this. There are long-term ways that will actually make things better. And there are short-term ways that likely will make things worse no matter how satisfying they may be. I make no predictions as to which ones we choose. In a country this big and well-armed, my guess is all of them.
He will die. Probably soon. He’s a morbidly obese 80-year-old man with a list of diseases and conditions that probably runs to several pages in his files. At that point all bets are off, and frankly I’m going to enjoy the knife fights that MAGA is going to engage in. Cults have no successors, and there isn’t anyone in that motley collection of human debris who can step in cleanly. Grab your popcorn.
Inventing new profanity sounds like it would be fun, actually. I spent five years as a volunteer firefighter and more than thirty years backstage. I grew up in and around Philadelphia. There are very few words or phrases that haven’t been directed at me at least once. But there’s always room for more.
Okay. Point taken. I did not properly identify this post as a probable first draft. But then, neither did you … ๐
That he will die has never been a question - nobody makes it out alive - but damn! My popcorn is getting cold and soggy.
What we require is a clear-headed, honest LEADER. Pete Buttigieg would be my first choice, but I don’t think he can get elected in this country. Although I thought the same about Obama, and I sure called that one wrong. Twice. So maybe. I despair to see anyone else with the same spark.
We also require a strong stable of young, Idealistic, motivated people in the Legislature. People my age have almost no value as lawmakers — we have lost sight of ‘The Dream’.
Don’t have a clue how we restore justice to the Judicial Branch.
I’ll be 73 in less than three months. I’ve grown cynical in my dotage. Hard to reach anything close to your level of optimism.
At this point, my only hope of adequate expression is a whole new level of profanity.
Lucy
Oh no – this was definitely not the first draft. The first draft looked a lot more like what you were describing in your first comment. ;)
Yeah, I really was hoping to be celebrating while the days were a little longer, though any day would be a good day. To be honest, I’ve already told my boss that I’m not coming in to work the next day, and he agreed that it was a valid reason to call out. Let me tell you, on that frabjous day my celebrations will be excessive, unseemly, and obscene and I will make no apologies for any of it.
I feel the same way about Buttigieg. And AOC, frankly. Pritzger and Newsom have been fighting well publicly but feel a bit too Old Boy. Ossoff could be a good Obama-like candidate. There are more choices than people realize, I think.
The judicial branch is actually doing pretty well except for the rotten borough at the very top. What needs to happen is to replace every justice named by Trump (and Clarence Thomas, while we’re at it) with an actual qualified jurist. And impose a strict ethics code, one with sharp teeth for violations.
We need that ethics code throughout the federal government.
I have a long list of things I need to see implemented, not least of which are full-scale open and transparent investigations and prosecutions of every member of the current regime. I’ll vote for any candidate who tells me this is their priority too.
I confess that I’ve never been called an optimist before. I’m from Philadelphia. The 1964 Phillies are engraved on the soul of everyone there, even if it happened years or decades before they were born. I just refuse to concede.
There’s a guy I follow in Instagram named Jonathan Edward Durham – he posts under the name “thisone0verhere” – who posted something after Dolly Parton died that I really loved.
“I know it’s hard to watch all these beautiful things be carried away by time and see the wrong things growing in their place. But listen. Listen. We have to be the beautiful things now. It has to be us. It has to be us. Courage.”
I never expect to win. But fuck them if they think I’ll go down without a fight.
"... Courage.." ๐ฅน
