Northeast Roadtrip, Part 1

There are certain things that definitively tell you that you’ve returned home from a trip. Sleeping in your own bed, for example, or knowing exactly where to find a glass in the kitchen. Things like that. One of the bigger signs for me these days is that I woke up this morning, came downstairs, and had my usual breakfast of black tea and oatmeal, after living large for a week and eating pretty much anything I wanted.

Back to the usual fare.

I like black tea and oatmeal. I have reached an age where I don’t see any reason to eat things I do not like. There are plenty of healthy things I can eat instead of things I do not like. But there are also a lot of other not quite as healthy things that I could also eat that are more interesting and that’s what vacations are for.

We spent the last week or so cruising around the Northeastern US, visiting friends and family – some of whom we hadn’t seen since before the pandemic, and some of whom we’d never met in person at all before this trip (don’t ever let anyone tell you that friends you make online aren’t real friends – that’s just snobbish nonsense). We had a lovely time!

I will say that breaking my wrist was not in the plans, but that’s on me for not watching where I was going. You can’t take me anywhere, I suppose. I’ll put the full story in at the appropriate point. It doesn’t hurt and I’m slowly figuring out workarounds for all the things I would normally just do, so that’s coming along. Also, I can highly recommend the orthopedic urgent care in Albany NY – nice people, fully equipped, professional, and 58 minutes from walking in the door to walking back out with x-rays and a cast! Amazing! Sometimes the system works. It’s my first ever broken bone, and if I’m going to start down that path at my age this was a pretty smooth entry.

Plus I got to choose from a wide variety of pleasing colors for the cast. I went with a lovely shade of purple to match the Home Campus décor. “Oooh, good choice!” said the PA who put it on. “That won’t show dirt.”

I now have an A in cast selection, which is a perfectly normal and reasonable thing to want to achieve.

So to Mike and Krista, Ewan and Jenny, Abby and Joshua, Ellen and Rob, Trish and Joel, Keith and Lori, and Jenny, thank you for everything! We had a lovely time visiting, and we hope to see you again soon!
