Return of the Travelers

You forget how big this world is.

Every time I hear some idiot talking about how their latest project, the most recent political scandal, the newest trend, or some other event that looms large in their personal space will change the world forever, I ask myself, “Do they even know how big the world is?  What does this mean to some guy in Peru?”

We drove across a very small subsection of the world over the last week and change.

We left Wisconsin on the 17th, spent a few lovely days in Colorado, and then came home via every tourist attraction in South Dakota.  We had a grand time, and more will be said here shortly.

But the thing that this trip impressed upon my mind was simply how big the world is and how little one gets to see of it.  We drove across mile after mile after mile of open space (Wyoming, for example, which as near as I can tell has fourteen people in it – all of them using the pumps that I wished to use at a gas station in Lusk) and still only went through a fraction of what we could have seen.

It’s good to be home.

There are vista people and there are wall people, and I’m happy to be back inside my home with my books and my stuff.

But I’m glad I went.
