"Hitman" was one of the books I read on Kim's e-reader - where she got it I don't know - and it was fascinating enough to convince me to finish it despite the format. It is definitely a hard one to describe or categorize, but worth reading and recommending.Davidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03463621516644789183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5977625681756554695.post-4031633301637474922012-12-27T00:48:04.541-06:002012-12-27T00:48:04.541-06:00I need to come back to read your book list in full...I need to come back to read your book list in full when I'm less frazzled from holiday travel and my concentration is better. But I did want to remark on the The Hitman's Guide to Housecleaning. I don't know how on earth I ran across it (read it in the Kindle version) and have puzzled how to comment on it when and if I ever do comment on my books-read list for my blog, since I'm also puzzled what to think of it, let alone how to describe it. Kudos to your good job at tackling that!Lee Ihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15721969338069074639noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5977625681756554695.post-44513440387256143002012-12-26T17:48:03.621-06:002012-12-26T17:48:03.621-06:00Terri, I am glad that you and so many others enjoy...Terri, I am glad that you and so many others enjoy your e-readers! The "joke" in my house growing up was that at any given moment I was reading something, be it a food label or whatever was printed on the bathroom tissue packaging. I also enjoy my Kindle. I didn't think I would, and it did take me awhile to get used to it, but for years, I had stopped reading because I hated to go out shopping for books. I occasionally would order from Amazon.com, but when I wanted to read something, I hated to wait for delivery. The Kindle removes all those barriers for me, and I've read more in the last year than I had in the last ten. One of the advantages for me, as I am in my 50's and have aging eyes (so far, for me, the WORST part of aging), is that I can boost up the print size to accommodate my vision. More "page turning" to do, but so much better on my eyes!Terrihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00899724691662334134noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5977625681756554695.post-18104382492654049702012-12-26T15:52:48.160-06:002012-12-26T15:52:48.160-06:00I think I mentioned here before that JKJ is extrem...I think I mentioned here before that JKJ is extremely popular in Russia. I find them clumsy to use. I find them distracting. I don't like hauling around expensive gadgets that I can easily lose or break (vs. a $7 paperback). I don't mind waiting for books to arrive - that is part of the fun to me.

Yes, I appreciate cheap or free books. And on long trips I might be convinced to settle for an e-reader for convenience sake - but that is definitely what would happen: I would be putting up with something I don't like in order to gain practical benefits.

Lots of people like e-readers, and to them I say "Good for you - have at it." The ability to begin reading a book within a few minutes of deciding that it would be interesting ("look, a rabbit; I should read Watership Down; DONE"), and the opportunity to carry a lot of books portably for a long trip is, I think, worth not knowing what page you are on. Most of all, it can save a LOT of money, as ebooks are usually cheaper than paper copies (e.g., Complete Works of Mark Twain for $1.99), if not free.

That said, I would not give up my paper copies of Mark Helprin's "Winter's Tale" or The Library of America's volume of James Thurber for large sums, so I reckon that hard copy has its place.PDanielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14963091436036948195noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5977625681756554695.post-58314311848344774402012-12-26T11:49:25.622-06:002012-12-26T11:49:25.622-06:00Raising Children:
