News and Updates

1. We live in an age of unrepentant cruelty.

2. That isn’t really news if you have been paying attention at all to what passes for American politics these days, but I still find it depressing anyway.

3. Just when I think I should stop putting in so much effort with my World History Before 1500 class and coast into the end of the semester, it turns out my students actually are getting something out of it. On the one hand, that’s why you do this sort of thing. On the other hand, well, no coasting. Oh well.

4. I actually got to sleep before midnight last night, for the first time in weeks. I am getting too old for that nonsense.

5. Having a house full of leftover Halloween candy is a dangerous, dangerous thing. Especially if there are Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups involved.

6. It’s a good thing the climate’s not really changing, because otherwise, you know, I’d be worried.

7. I really wish there were a Sarcasm Font in general use.

8. Is it just me or have the Teabaggers essentially conceded the 2012 Presidential election? I’m guessing they’ve found their mojo in simply staying on the sidelines and destroying what’s already standing - having to create something in its place would be more responsibility than they want to have. It’s always a bit disheartening when the Onion story turns out to be true.

9. The 1950s are the only decade in human history that can be reliably identified by a bass line.

10. “Historically, a story about people inside impressive buildings ignoring or even taunting people standing outside shouting out them turns out to be a story with an unhappy ending.” (Lemony Snickett). Truer words have never been spoken.

1) You're harshing my pie-in-the-sky optimism.

2) Don't get sad, get militantly obnoxious and lippy and offensive. You still might be depressed, but rage seems to give depression a purpose :)

3) Good for you! And them!

4) I took the dog to the vet today with a big pillow crease mark on my face. This has nothing to do with your lack of sleep but I just wanted to share. Why do you always have pillow-crease face only when you have to talk to people first thing in the morning?

5) As long as there are no maple creams, I'm safe. And it's all about me. Stick them in the freezer. That way you know they're there but you can't see them sitting there taunting you, calling you, begging to be eaten.

6) Yeah, the east coast had snow so that proves climate change is a lie being foisted on us by Al Gore-worshipping, dirty hippie, anti-industry types. Thank god we can put that one to rest finally.

7) Me too. You know, since everyone HATES comic sans, why don't we just name that the sarcasm font and be done with it. YOu can't use it for anything else.

8) Yes, they can wreak more havoc from the sidelines and let Barry and the Dem administration take the credit, er, blame for their cruel legislation. FTW! (and no, that doesn't mean For the Win in this case. Expletive the Weenies!) I know you have kids, and they may read your blog. See how thoughtful I can be?

9) I don't get it, but I'll take your word for it. I'm lost about half the time, so don't worry about it.

10) I get it and agree completely. It's going to be a long election year.

1. Yeah, I do that. The tears of optimists add such a nice flavor to my tea, though.

2. Oh, anger I gots – anger in bulk, anger in depth, anger that threatens to take over my entire world sometimes. I’m four kinds of tiresome to most people these days, trust me – I just haven’t had the stomach to write about it recently. Come the revolution, I will not be surprised.

3. It did make my world nicer, knowing that. Harder, but nicer.

4. That’s the universe’s way of making sure you don’t take yourself too seriously. It’s the same reason all online rants about the proper use of the English language contain at least one grammatical error.

5. Maple creams – wow. Nobody here gives those out anymore, alas.

6. I know! Pay no attention to the rapid accumulation of “once in a century” weather moments, that’s what I say.

7. That would be an ecologically sound way to recycle electrons online. Although to be honest I don’t really get the hate for Comic Sans. It seems to me a basically inoffensive font. Maybe it’s just trying too hard to be likeable and needs to add a few harder edges.

8. Thoughtful indeed. :) My “I don’t need to spend the next hour explaining that one” gene thanks you.

9. You know, I need to make this a separate blog post – it seems so obvious to me, but nobody ever gets it when I say it.

10. See point one.

9. Not to mention a chord progression (let's forget it was first popularized in the 30s).

That, John! That was exactly what I was talking about!

I don't have 10 of anything, but here are my 3... cause my brain isn't as big...

1. Found a half a rabbit in the fields at the park today.

2. A MacBook Air isn't as small as it looks on the Apple website

3. I love that Lemony Snicket (Daniel Handler) appearance especially the part about being lucky. On Sat, the New York Times ran a front page photo of some Greeks watching the Parliament debate austerity and I was struck by the impeccable beauty and craftsmanship of the architecture. Contrast.

That's okay - my brain isn't that big either. It just tends to spill out and puddle up all over the internet sometimes.

1. Half a rabbit does not work half as well as a whole rabbit.

2. I do not understand the need to miniaturize technology past a certain point. Yes, I like laptops. But eventually all of the world's gizmos will fit onto the head of a single pin, whereupon they will be lost.

3. The Greeks get architecture.

You're welcome.

I like it.

Now how to get it to work...

And thanks. :)
